Damien Mitchell: An Exclusive Interview with A.I.M.O.

What is your personal favorite subject matter to paint and why?

Letters. First and foremost. Whenever I pick up a can or marker I'm always drawing letters. Lately I've been painting pictures of people and places on walls but first thing in the morning and last thing at night- I'm writing letters.

Is there a colour palette you choose to use over others? How do you decide which colours to paint with? Are the pieces designed in full detail before you paint?

For a few years I was working mainly in gray scale. Recently I've been getting into the work of Jack Davis' and have started using more exaggerated colour instead of just a splash here and there. We'll see where that goes. I'm usually working from a sketch or my phone at some point then usually just go for it.

I know you paint in other countries and are originally from Australia. Do you have a favorite part of the world to paint in?

I grew up in Wagga Wagga, Australia and whenever I'm back in the country I'll usually try and get something up, somewhere. This previous January I was in Broken Hill, N.S.W. which was a great experience. The landscape goes on forever, its blue sky and red dirt wherever you look.

What art hangs on your walls?

At the moment we have a bit of a collection going on. Moving house as much as we do means any art I own has to be small enough to cart around. Looking at the walls right now though I see a piece by Junky Projects, Ramiro Studios and Mr Prvt. Sitting next to a picture of some birds I found on the street.

What is next for you- upcoming events and/or collaborations?

I am planning a little trip to Europe later this year and hope to get a bit of painting in. Next year, I'll be heading to Brazil and Colombia for a stint. At this stage I'm just happy to go wherever this painting thing takes me. Where can our readers find out more about you and your work?

I update my website damienmitchell.com or instagram: @damien__mitchell pretty regularly with some of my legal stuff.
